Born between November and February and weighing less than two pounds at birth, polar bear cubs will gain 20 to 30 pounds by the time they leave the den between February and April. For the next 10 to 15 days, the cubs play and gain strength for the long journey to Hudson Bay, where their mother will hunt seals. These cubs stay close to their mother for protection and warmth—one trying to hitch a ride on its mother's broad back.
