With abundant food for her and her four cubs, 399 didn’t begin her journey to the den until late in the year. Over the final three days of December, the large ursine family started the trek north, walking some 30 miles through deep snow, going up and over Blacktail Butte, and crossing the Snake River twice before finally reaching Pilgrim Creek and their den site.
